PWCS has released 
details of the Phase 4 of the Continuity of Learning Plan* for all students, that will begin April 14 following Spring Break and the Teacher Workday. This plan provides more specific direction on the Virtual Schoolhouse and how to successfully navigate learning virtually. The plan is outlined for you on the PWCS.edu website under the COVID-19 updates.


4th Grade Teachers will be collaborating on weekly activities for students and will provide you with activities for each subject area on a one page assignment document. Again, these activities are optional and will not be graded, but we want to encourage participation in the activities so that students do not fall behind. Each day students will have about three activities for to work on while at home (a subject, read to self, and an ENCORE activity). This is to provide you with extra support as you try to home school your child. The activities will be meaningful and related to 4th grade curriculum and SOL standards. When students finish an activity, you/they can take a picture of it and insert it into an email to send to me, however most assignments will come with an digital quick check provided in a link. Students are also encouraged to continue working on IXL, Dreambox, and coming soon Study Island. 

Only one subject will be taught per day by our 4th grade teachers and activities will be in different formats depending on what the teacher chooses to offer. Students should only be working for one hour on these particular activities per day.  We do not expect students to be working for long periods of time at home, and students can work on these activities whenever it is convenient for you. There is no set time of day for these classes. If students want to do additional work online on Study Island, iXL, Dreambox, or on any other activity offered by PWCS on the Home Learning Page, it is up to them. In the previous Dojo post I provided assignments and achievement levels for students to use IXL to bring up a past grade on a test in this marking period. I have also provided digital copies of all other assignments in in Parent VUE. I will be extending this offer for the remainder of this week as I am subject to process report cards using graded assignments from before March 14th. Class Announcements / Welcome Announcement
Welcome back from the winter break. I trust that all students are well rested and are ready to take on the challenges for the rest of the quarter.

*Early work activities are merely spiral reviews. Students are, therefore, encouraged to study the concepts reviewed each morning.

Supplies
Supplies can be brought to school on Meet the Teacher day. If you are not able to come that day, bring supplies on the first day of school. We will label supplies on the first day. Boxes of crayons, colored pencils, pencils, etc., may be labeled ahead of time.

Learning Goals

Students can recall that American started out as an English settlement. Now it has grown into a huge society. Students have an understanding that things change over time. Students have seen how women and African Americans contribute to the technological advances in America. 

Students will have the opportunity to interview people in service-related jobs, write and present findings. 

They will also have access to a variety of books that will allow them to explore famous individuals and their contributions to society.

Objectives:

Virginia Studies – VS.8 (Reconstruction)

-On the Class Story page of ClassDojo, I placed the Sway document that Mrs. Brooks-Smith created. I will place a copy of this document into the Files and Documents section of my class page.

Math – Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

-I will assign lessons in DreamBox that will cover this unit for the students to practice with. I also placed a practice packet into the Class Story of ClassDojo. I will put a copy of this packet into the Files and Documents section of my class page.

-Students can also log into Khan Academy through the Clever app or clever.com to work on math concepts. This program will track the students' progress.

Science – Electricity

- Before our break, we were discussing static electricity. When the students were meeting with Mrs. Horton (our Science teacher), they were learning about current electricity by creating circuits.

-There are a lot of great books about electricity on the EPIC website (www.getepic.com). This website is open from 8 am - 4 pm.  

Reading

-Two new books were assigned on Kids A-Z: Don't Wake the Mummy and Hiking the Appalachian Trail. Practice assignments were placed in the Class Story section of ClassDojo. I will also place these practices into the Files and Documents section of my class page. 

-Students are encouraged to read different types of books on Kids A-Z as well as take the quizzes attached to those books read. When I access the website, I can check on their progress and make adjustments when needed.

Writing 

-The Whoos Reading website is open so you can write reflections about the books you have read so far. I will be checking the website to see how my students are progressing. 

-Also the students should be working on their rough draft for their state research project. For the students who have finished the first draft, please have someone check it over before typing up your second draft in MS Word.
